American dance called the jitterbug
Jitterbug is a broad word for swing dancing that includes characteristics of the jive, east coast swing, collegiate shag/ swing, Charleston, and other swing dances .
Swing dancing began in the African-American communities of New York City in the early twentieth century. Many nightclubs had a whites-only or blacks-only policy due to racial segregation, but the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem had a no-discrimination policy, allowing whites and blacks to dance together, and it was there that the lindy hop dance flourished, with dancers like George Snowden and Frank Mann Jitterbug was initially a term of derision used by black consumers to designate whites who began to dance the lindy hop.
